Here are some of our recommended hiking and walking options for visitors to Fernie and Fernie Alpine Resort.
Hikes at Fernie Alpine Resort
Right from the front door of Cornerstone Lodge, you can quickly access numerous excellent hiking trails at Fernie Alpine Resort. As an added bonus in summer, Fernie Alpine Resort provides chairlift access to the high alpine hiking trails. On the Elk Chair side, enjoy a hike on the Summer Road Trail. Combining it with a stop at Nature Bob’s Interpretive Centre is the perfect family outing. On the Timber Chair side, Lost Boys Trail is an excellent option with spectacular scenic views from Lost Boys Lookout. More adventurous hikers can continue along Lost Boys Trail on a ridge hike to the top of Polar Peak. From there, enjoy a spectacular 360 Degree view of the surrounding Canadian Rockies.
Trails in and around the town of Fernie
For Cornerstone Lodge visitors with small children or those looking for a quick escape plan to visit nearby historic Fernie. The Main Town Loop takes you on a leisurely stroll along the beautiful Elk River. Additionally, the Great Northern Loop/Old Stumpy Trail as well as the Fairy Creek Falls Trail are excellent options for easier trails with great mountain views and scenery.
Epic Hiking Adventures
For those interested in a bigger excursion, plan a full day hike on Heiko’s Trail, the Mt Hosmer Trail, or the SpineBack Trail Island Lake Lodge. From old growth forests, to wild alpine flowers to stunning Rocky Mountain views from over 6000 feet, these challenging but rewarded trails are the highlight of any visit to Fernie. Heiko’s Trail, in particular, is considered by many avid hikers as one of the best day hiking trails in the Canadian Rockies complete with cascading waterfalls, giant caves and ancient cedars.
